Painting Acrylic

artist leah wilsonOver 20 years as a semi professional emerging contemporary fine artist, Leah’s primary & current medium would be acrylic paint – with a good variety of mediums, glosses and textured additives to make it interesting.

“It is as though the paintbrush is an extension of my being, as though it is a tuning fork adjusting the energy of the color and light until it sounds just right. When painting, I map out the layers in a premeditated construct in hopes of achieving depth on many levels.”

2014-2020 Acrylic Painting Series called “FREEDOM FLIGHT”.  The Squares are like windows revealing hints of hidden layers.  The message in the art is about depth  and perception. Feeling the layers hanging in space like curtains, with the concept of -particulate reflecting light. The flying bird is symbolic of motion, the Freedom is uplifting and positive with a breaking free from gravity sensation, for lack of foreground or relationship to a horizon line.   3x3 Freedom Flight #93x3 Freedom Flight #10

“Going back in time 30 years, black and white ink drawing was my choice medium. I was so serious about it being devoid of colour, so caught up in defending my ink work as art… it was an argument with a fellow artist about this fact that prompted me to start painting. Oil was my first choice, and then I fell in love acrylic much later.”

Note: As an artist, I had just started to find my purpose, the message for my life’s work…. more on that later :O) a hint:  quantum, macro, atomic, and scientific questions about how we perceive.

As the Creative Journey continues over the years Style development can be seen through these paintings that are 3-4 years apart in the making, very intuitive self portrait paintings = each from a significant time in my life and artistic journey.

Between 1997 and 2008 Leah was a professional mask maker.  Specialized in personally fitted custom Venetian style masks, shipping mostly to Vancouver, Calgary, and while living in Edmonton Alberta *locally.  Enjoying commissions from theatre, wedding &  themed costume parties.  This work merged with painting to create the series “Faces”.

Everything evolved from there, always inspired to reflect the world and how we perceive it.
